1 Thessalonians
A guide to community life in a post-covid world
A KST SHORT COURSE

Course Introduction
The letters to the Thessalonians are among the least preached and written about books in the whole New Testament and Dr Jen Smith is on a quest to try and do something about that!
In this course, she’ll help you dig deep into the book of 1 Thessalonians, paying close attention to what we know about the setting of the community from the book of Acts and investigating the nature of the relationship between those in Thessalonica and those who founded the community.
If you want to start 2023 by looking afresh at how the Church can build community, witness to the life of God, and thrive in doing so, this course is for you.
We’ll be thinking about issues such as:
- Cultural norms: How the Church is called to live in, alongside and disrupt cultural norms and what relation this bears to being converted to Christ
- Incarnational Faith: the practical implications this idea for Christian life
- The Nature of God: what it can teach us about communality and relationality
- Leadership: the two-way requirements of leadership demonstrated by the apostles
- Avoiding burn out: how we manage the relationship between ‘being’ and ‘doing’.
What To Expect
This course will be practical in its application. It will be a great example of how we can let the text of scripture inform our church life and practice.
Each week, there will be an audio session to listen to in preparation for a group discussion. Bring your thoughts and questions. We will wrestle with what it means to learn from the example of the Thessalonians in our own contexts.
Come ready to be encouraged, challenged and see things from a different point of view!
